Normally a race of between 50-65 miles, it is one of the most popular EAORA weekend races. This year the trophy is the back-to-back race finishing at the Nass Beacon at West Mersea.

The Jane’s Cup is named after the daughter of Brigadier Basil Chichester-Cooke of the Royal Engineers YC. He was a great supporter of the Association and the Jane’s Cup was given in memory of his daughter ‘who loved boats’. Jane was the finder of the cannonball of the eponymous ‘Cannonball Trophy’. The Jane’s Cup has always been regarded with great affection by the Association. The starts are from Burnham with courses of 43 or 50 miles finishing up the Medway. There is then a bit of hike up to the Medway Yacht Club in preparation for the evening entertainment.

This trophy is raced for between Dutch and English yachts. The ‘Cannon Ball’ is believed to have been found by Jane Chichester-Cooke in 1962 in the mud of the Medway near Upnor Castle – and was said by the National Maritime Museum to have been fired from a Dutch warship of De Ruyter’s fleet in 1667. The cannonball was mounted on a plinth of yew from a tree in Upnor castle. The Cannon ball counts towards EAORA points and the course is set by R.O. Brian Bolton in the Markermeer.

The Houghton Cup originally was an 82 mile night race taking the fleet to and from the Crouch via the Sunk and Cork Light Vessels. This trophy, from the Crouch YC was originally presented in 1911 by Sidney Houghton, who was noted for his 1921 single-handed transatlantic crossing from Halifax, Novia Scotia to Burnham. This race now always takes place on the first day of Burnham Week. Courses are between 42 and 50 miles in length, starting from the Branklet buoy at the mouth of the Roach, travelling to the Swin Spitway possibly to Barrow Deep, returning to the Crouch YC line.

The Buckley Goblets remains as it did in the inaugural season, the final race of the year – presented by JC Buckley in 1950 - although then it was limited only to larger boats (then 24ft LWL!). This year the traditional race starts on the Friday morning at 0700 for the 90 mile passage from West Mersea to Ostend. The customary hospitality of the Royal North Sea Yacht Club and of the town of Ostend ensures a great last race party. An end-of-season atmosphere pervades the race and an end-of-season hangover tends to pervade the return trip.
